Commercial recumbent tail boxes like Novosport have a round leading edge. Some of homemade boxes have sharp leading edges and conform closely to the riders back while other have square leading edges and a several inch gap to the riders back.

If I was to make my own tail box, what is the right configuration?

Which bike is it going on, the FWD or LWB bike? I think the Razz Fazz was an effective tail box. Id say the rounded one with the smallest gap, though it depends how you make it, coroplast is not easy to make rounded.

If it is a low racer with a low seat recline it is more about enclosing under the seat and rear wheel. I tried over 20 configurations including something like the Razz Fazz with the sides being wider than the shoulders and about the height of the back of my helmet. On my Baron I got the best results with it being about 2"s narrower than my shoulders and only coming up to a little over shoulder height. And it tapers downward from my shoulders to the rear end. I would build it from card board and keep changing it until it works. Above about 19-20 mph I saw about a 3-4 mph increase in speed with the Baron and it's tail box.

The under the seat and around the wheel is the most critical. The box itself should only be about 16" wide. I went from 22-23 without it to 25-27 with it.

No problem. Don't forget the foam splitter behind the front wheel covered in white duct tape. I took the nose cone and fairing back off when I got knocked over by the Texas wind!
