I hope to do a fall/winter tour of parts of Texas in the corovelo. My first and only destination for sure is Midland to visit Velomobile USA. From there not real sure, but plans are down to San Antonio then Austin and back home. It should be around 1,000-1,200 miles in all.

If I decide not to do the FL tour, I might keep going south after San Antonio down to Gulf and turn right and head over to Padre Island. Never been to Padre. I lived in FL for 3 years and been back several times. Maybe it is time to check out the TX coast.

Hi Jerry,

I have no aspirations to ride around the middle of Texas, just doesn't appeal to me. Part of the ACA Southern Tier would be considerable. Could do Fla to key west and back in Feb if the HPV races are held.

The google route is mostly chip seal, so bring chip seal tires.

Looks like scrub land, oil wells everywhere: https://www.google.com/maps/@32.0944076,-101.9349155,3a,75y,100.49h,86.93t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sT9FkzXwDqbUlK28Neyji5w!2e0!7i3328!8i1664

Tony,

I have always wanted to ride to my mom's house from my house. I would ride from my place to Austin, then take the Southern Tier over to Maryville, LA and turn N-NE to mom's place. Round trip for me would be 950-1,000 miles. No new states, just something I have thought about for a few years. Where would you want to start and end if you join in? Nov-Dec?

I talked to my touring/racing buddy who live in Abilene and he asked me if I liked riding in strong winds and desolate places. He said it was worse heading to Midland. Not highly motivating is it?

Probably not a nice place, desolate and smell of oil wells. Not nice to camp next to. I can't commit just yet for nov-dec.

I'll be in MO somewhere around Thanksgiving. Nothing about the tour is in stone yet. I might wait until I get back from MO. Maybe after stopping at my mom's, ride on over to the MS River on the Southern Tour.

I have decided to take a tour to my mom's place and back just before Thanksgiving. Then later in the winter do my western to southern Texas tour. I like the idea of leaving and returning by bike instead of driving or some other means of transport.

The gulf from Pensacola to maybe around St Pete might be a better option than west Texas. The tour to my mom's is still on. I got to thinking and re-reading about the vast wasteland and crazy winds in west TX. Not many options for food and water. In FL you are not too far from civilization. The wife might act as a sag as she wants to go to the beach. If she doesn't sag, I'll drive to Pensacola and find a place to leave the van and get a ride back from wherever I stop the tour. Could possibly ride back to van. Nothing is set.

It is still very desolate out there. I don't want to race tumble weed and rattle snakes! Lol. Once you get west of me about 20 miles, what they call trees are called cactus a or shrubs every where else. It isn't bad from my place to my mom's. You are never too far away from food and water and there are actual trees. I am really hoping to make the FL trip.

Don't know yet if the November tour will happen. The doctor's and family are afraid I'll get off and get sick again. Maybe I can talk the wife into driving the van and being the sag driver. Pick a spot to meet up for the night. It would only take 2-2 1/2 days to get to my mom's place. Go out for day rides around Lake Toledo Bend and down to DeRidder. LA to ride parts of the Southern Tier route. Maybe take the Southern Tier back to Austin then turn north for home.
