Anyone looking to improve the speed of their streamliner with dimples? Here's a company that makes a vinyl covering for vehicles that has golf-ball like dimples.
http://www.fastskinz.com/

This Popular Mechanics article quotes some Ford engineers who studied the results of a 2009 Ford Flex covered with this material.

Of course, Mythbusters got a car's miles per gallon to increase from 26 to 29 MPG with clay dimples (they used a Ford Taurus) ...

Dimples if used, do not need to cover the entire shape. They work best on blunt type shapes like a golf ball.

OK, Mike, I give up. What am I missing? Where on that site do they sell the film?

Hi Garrie,
I couldn't find a "Buy" button on that site either. It must be invisible, maybe the film is too.

On their blog it mentions SEMA, so I'll guess that you can get this stuff from automotive after-markets suppliers.

One reason the dimples work on a golf ball is that it rotates. We try to prevent that with the streamliners, although I have seen both Sam and Damyan do it. I think the dimples may help if you have them where the flow disconnects, but there would be no gain on a leading edge.

LOL ,but ya if it an't a ball it makes a def and so dose real world size.
There has been some stuff done with "Zig Zag strips" at flow disconnect points that I like better then golfball design, but is speed reactive..

Not the most organized site, but maybe they don't sell direct. The email on their blog doesn't work either. I tracked down a distributor (http://skinzwraps.com/) and emailed them for some pricing info.

We contacted FastSkiz for information last year and they wanted us to provide the vehicle for them to apply. Since we are still building when we get to Battle Mountain that will never be an option but if someone really wants the film.....

I've found that rough surfaces with lots of dimpled holes are very easy to make. <G>

Has anyone experimented with fish scales? My son once caught a carp that would have been sufficient to cover half of our vehicle and a carp skin covering would be a lot cheaper than carbon and epoxy covered with Fastskiz.

There should be a wealth of information at carpskinz.com.

Unless your vehicle is getting lots of separation (like a golf ball or a normal car) dimples do not make sense. If your vehicle is getting separation, then a better tailcone can fix the problem better than dimples.

If separation happens at small areas, a glued strip of sandpaper will turbulate the air enough to delay it. Of course, dealing with the cause of the separation is a better approach.

I recommend "The Leading Edge" by Goro Tamai for a very good discussion about vehicle aerodynamics. It will shed the light on a number of myths going around, as well as ask some interesting new questions. Amazon usually has it for 40-50$.

I recommend the corollary, "Everyone Poops" by Taro Gomi.
